This month (August 2017), Lime essential oil is dōTERRA's product of the month. Those who participate in dōTERRA's rewards system called the Loyalty Rewards Program (LRP) will receive this oil free. If you haven't had a need to order this before, you may be wondering how to use it, or perhaps you've come across my blog looking for ways to use lime essential oil.
Lime essential oil can be used in many of the same ways that we use lemon essential oil, such as in food, drink, to clean, for our health, and for our emotions.
FOOD AND DRINK**
Some good examples are to put a few drops into your water bottle, or a drop or two into a glass of water, soda water or a smoothie. You may like to combine it with Lemon essential oil. Lemon and Lime is such a yummy combination! Lime essential oil can also be used in alcoholic drinks. In food you can add it to salads, put it in salad dressings, and it is yummy to add it to cooked fish. There is plenty of sweet food you can add it to such as cakes, slices, icing, desserts and so on.
Lime is terrific to use for cleaning due to it's cleansing properties. Just like lemon essential oil, you can use it to rub off sticky residues like when removing stickers or labels. Lime essential oil is also great to use when washing up the dishes. Combine 20 drops of Lime essential oil with 8 drops of Lemon essential oil and 6 drops of Lavender essential oil, and add these to 2 cups of castile soap. Put the liquid into a bottle and squirt about a tablespoon-full into the dish water.
Add lime essential oil to your air refresher sprays and to linen sprays. Lemon and Tea Tree essential oils also have cleansing properties. Combine 2 drops each of Lime, Lemon and Tea Tree oils and add to wood or lava, or to a diffuser for a fresh, happy fragrance.
Beta pinene is one of the primary constituents in Lime essential oil. It has an effect on the brain's neurotransmitters. Limonene is another chemical constituent which is good at lifting mood and promoting a happier feeling.
Lime essential oil can be diffused by itself but if you want to combine it with other oils, Lavender, Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, Cedarwood or Black Pepper blend well with it.
Physically, Lime essential oil supports a healthy immune system. The easiest way to use it is to add a drop or two to your water or soda water. A drop or two can be taken in a vegie capsule with food**, or you may like to add it to smoothies, salsa, or salads or meals**.
** If you add essential oil to a drink or food, please ensure you use a therapeutic grade essential oil, that is from a plant that we normally eat, such as citruses and herbs. Bottles of essential oils labelled "for dietary use" are safe to ingest in very small amounts but ensure they are taken with food.
The real question should be: How do I redirect what I already spend on healthcare and cleaning from the pharmacy and supermarket to natural remedies?
Each drop of essential oil is very powerful! Only a very small amount is needed and goes a long way. When it comes to healthcare, essential oils can be used with carrier oil and applied topically to the skin. The essential oil will eventually end up in body systems. Some of doTERRA's essential oils can be taken internally. They have Australia's Therapeutic Goods Authority (TGA) approval for consumption. Many people enjoy the health benefits of adding lemon essential oil to their bottle of water, and may also take a dose of essential oils in a vegie capsule (a capsule made from vegetables) to help remedy a health issue. Aromatic use of essential oils affects body systems, the most obvious being the respiratory system. Aromatic use may be by using a diffuser or special jewellery that holds essential oil to be dispersed naturally through the air, which you breathe in.
When it comes to cleaning, drops can be added to the washing machine, to cleaning sprays, to remove sticky residue, get rid of nasty odours and more.
Isn't it wonderful to have such a versatile remedy on hand that is not only supporting our health, but is natural substance perfectly safe to breathe in when cleaning! I used to dread cleaning the shower because I'd smell the chemical spray the entire time I was in there! Not anymore!
See the image below for the cost of certain essential oils by the drop. When you have something so versatile at hand, why would you choose anything else! And the bonus is that it is natural and perfectly safe to use.
So I'd like to challenge you to think of what products you buy at the supermarket that you could easily replace with a perfectly safe and cheaper homemade product, or one of doTERRA's products.
How about your surface spray? A 500ml chemical spray from the supermarket costs approximately $5. If you make it yourself and reuse your glass spray bottle the price becomes a lot cheaper! On Guard essential oil blend has antibacterial qualities.
Glass spray bottle (to be reused) $2
Cooled, boiled water $0
10 drops On Guard essential oil $1.60
A total of $3.60 the first time, and when refilling $1.60!!!
Tea Tree essential oil has some wonderful properties. You can spend less than a dollar on a 30ml spritzer bottle and add some carrier oil, Lavender essential oil and Tea Tree essential oil and use it as an owie spray on the skin, instead of a chemical based antiseptic liquid which costs $10.45 for 500ml. You can also use this spray to clean your hands if there is no soap available.
Glass spritzer bottle $0.70 (to be reused)
Just under 30ml Carrier oil $1.50
5 drops Lavender essential oil $0.55
5 drops Tea Tree essential oil $0.50
A total of $3.25 the first time, and when refilling $2.55!!!

These are such a fun school holiday activity to do at home with the kids in the kitchen! It's cheap because there aren't a lot of ingredients, and it's quick as only mixing is required. Some adult help is needed because of the stove, and a hot jug when pouring.
Put some water onto boil in the saucepan. It needs to be about 5cm deep, enough to come up to the height of what's in your jug. At your bench, pour the water into the pyrex jug, and add the flavoured jelly crystals and the gelatine powder. Stir to combine. It may be lumpy.
Place the jug into the boiling water and start stirring the jelly mix so that the sugar dissolves. This usually takes a few minutes. Take the saucepan off the heat and carry to a safe place (eg. pot holder) on the bench or the drainer beside the sink. You may need a mit or a towel to hold the handle of the jug as it is hot. Let the mixture cool a little.
Add a few drops of essential oil. Stir in. You may like to put your moulds on a tray so that the jellies don't spill when you pick up the moulds to put them in the fridge. Pour your mixture into the moulds and transfer them to the fridge to set.
Set your timer for 20 minutes. Pop out the gummies and eat! I made Lemon Lime Gummies.
Lemon Lime Homemade Gummies
1/3 cup of filtered water
2 packets of unflavoured gelatine
1 box of flavoured jelly crystals
3 drops of Lime essential oil
For thousands of years, essential oils have been used to treat various conditions in different cultures around the world on babies, children, adults and the elderly. Age does not prevent us from using essential oils, however we do need to be careful about any skin sensitivity and allergies.
In the table below, dermal refers to the oils applied to the skin. As you can see, an ideal amount at any one time is between 1 to 2 drops per application. So you can pour a little carrier into a glass, ceramic, wooden or stainless steel bowl and add 1 to 2 drops. You can then use all of that in that application if you wish. For example, if your child has a fever, you may like to massage diluted peppermint essential oil into their back to help them feel more comfortable and cool down.
We also want to dilute when we are making a roller bottle for our children. For example we may want to make one for focus, or for bedtime.
Babies up to 12 months can have 0.5% to 2% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – add 1 to 3 drops and fill with carrier oil
10ml roller bottle – add 1 to 6 drops and fill with carrier oil
For children aged 1 to 5 years:
Children aged 1 to 5 years can have 2% to 5% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – add 3 to 7 drops and fill to the top with carrier oil
10ml roller bottle – add 6 to 15 drops and fill to the top with carrier oil
For children aged 6 to 11 years:
Children aged 6 to 11 years can have 5% to 25% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – a minimum of 7 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
10ml roller bottle – a minimum of 15 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
For children aged 12 to 17 years:
Children aged 12 to 17 years can have 10% to 50% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – a minimum of 15 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
10ml roller bottle – a minimum of 30 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
The best place to start is to do a patch test by either massaging or rolling the oil onto the bottoms of your child’s feet. When using essential oils, we often apply them to the bottoms of our feet because the feet are less prone to sensitivity or irritation. The skin is thicker on the bottom and therefore essential oils are absorbed more slowly with less risk of sensitivity.
If you are using essential oils for a specific health condition, you may need to reapply every few hours as the oils evaporate and wear off.
Can you just imagine these figures...globally the essential oil market is valued to be USD11.67 billion by the year 2022!!! According to research, the market exceeded USD6 billion in the year 2015. Those figures are staggering! More and more people are turning to organic food and goods, and more people are becoming informed about the nasty chemicals in their food and drink and in their lives generally. More and more consumers are making the choice to live as chemical free as they can, or where their budget permits.
What sets essential oils apart, is the fact that they are a natural remedy, but they don't have the range and intensity of side effects that conventional medicines too. Even better for athletes, is that they don't have to worry about anything showing up in tests, that could be the case when taking supplements.
Essential oils affect the brain in approximately 20 seconds after inhaling them. Emotionally, this has a positive effect on the brain. So massaging essential oils onto your body is not just relaxing because of the massage, but if relaxing essential oils are chosen, they will help facilitate that relaxed and calm feeling.
Inhalation is often the first way we come across essential oils. As we find out how else they can help us, we start using them topically, and there are many different oils to support the body's health and wellness. Essential oils can penetrate the cell membrane and eliminate threats.
There have been varying standards in the essential oil industry so historically, aromatherapists have had to be cautious about oral and internal use. doTERRA's essential oils are pure and are a therapeutic grade. If the essential oil comes from a plant you would usually digest, then of course it is safe to consume. There are guidelines available as to how much and how often to take essential oils internally and orally.
Oral use is when you apply an essential oil to the mouth. For example, Clove essential oil can be helpful with a sore tooth. Rub a little onto the area that is sore in the mouth. Some people use Frankincense in the mouth by either putting a drop under the tongue, or rubbing a little into the roof of their mouth.
Essential oils have been used to flavour food for a very long time. A little goes a long way and in fact, sometimes 1 drop can even be too much. In that case, dip a toothpick in the oil, then swirl it around in the food to flavour it. This is often the case with herbs such as Rosemary, Oregano and Basil.
Whilst some bottles of essential oils can be quite costly, there are others that are quite cheap eg. Lemon. Lemon is such a versatile essential oil, that it not only can be used for it's health benefits, but it is often used as a non toxic way to clean. A drop of essential oil costs literally cents. A little goes a long way and so with cleaning products, when you add your other ingredients such as castille soap, the end product is a nature based product that is often cheaper than what you buy at the shop. Even a drop of the more expensive bottles of essential oils still cost cents. If you can help yourself and your family at home, with an essential oil medicine cabinet, it saves you money at the chemist, and you are not supporting a pharmaceutical company, but in doTERRA's case, you are supporting farmers and their communities in poor countries, and a parent who is trying to support their family.
Research continues to be done on the health benefits of essential oils. This kind of research doesn't usually attract a lot of funding. It's not connected with pharmaceutical companies which usually have the money to pay for research. There are lots of anecdotal stories and personal stories in essential oil communities. Essential oils are a low toxic approach to supporting your health and wellness.

It's that time of year again. The time of year we are frantic trying to get all our Christmas present shopping in. Have we got everything, who did we forget, and then there's the shopping list for Christmas food, and all the other little things that come with each unique family's traditional way of spending Christmas.
Some of us may experience all of the above - stress, alcohol and emotions, and some maybe one of the above. So how can a natural solution help us with any of these...
Simply rub the oils of choice onto your pulse points, or put them in a diffuser. Take a quiet moment while you do it. Take 3 deep breaths so the organic compounds reach your olfactory nerve and start to ease your feelings.
