For thousands of years, essential oils have been used to treat various conditions in different cultures around the world on babies, children, adults and the elderly. Age does not prevent us from using essential oils, however we do need to be careful about any skin sensitivity and allergies.
In the table below, dermal refers to the oils applied to the skin. As you can see, an ideal amount at any one time is between 1 to 2 drops per application. So you can pour a little carrier into a glass, ceramic, wooden or stainless steel bowl and add 1 to 2 drops. You can then use all of that in that application if you wish. For example, if your child has a fever, you may like to massage diluted peppermint essential oil into their back to help them feel more comfortable and cool down.
We also want to dilute when we are making a roller bottle for our children. For example we may want to make one for focus, or for bedtime.
Babies up to 12 months can have 0.5% to 2% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – add 1 to 3 drops and fill with carrier oil
10ml roller bottle – add 1 to 6 drops and fill with carrier oil
For children aged 1 to 5 years:
Children aged 1 to 5 years can have 2% to 5% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – add 3 to 7 drops and fill to the top with carrier oil
10ml roller bottle – add 6 to 15 drops and fill to the top with carrier oil
For children aged 6 to 11 years:
Children aged 6 to 11 years can have 5% to 25% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – a minimum of 7 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
10ml roller bottle – a minimum of 15 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
For children aged 12 to 17 years:
Children aged 12 to 17 years can have 10% to 50% dilution.
5ml roller bottle – a minimum of 15 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
10ml roller bottle – a minimum of 30 drops and up to 1:3 dilution (1 drop of essential oil to 3 drops of carrier oil)
The best place to start is to do a patch test by either massaging or rolling the oil onto the bottoms of your child’s feet. When using essential oils, we often apply them to the bottoms of our feet because the feet are less prone to sensitivity or irritation. The skin is thicker on the bottom and therefore essential oils are absorbed more slowly with less risk of sensitivity.
If you are using essential oils for a specific health condition, you may need to reapply every few hours as the oils evaporate and wear off.
Can you just imagine these figures...globally the essential oil market is valued to be USD11.67 billion by the year 2022!!! According to research, the market exceeded USD6 billion in the year 2015. Those figures are staggering! More and more people are turning to organic food and goods, and more people are becoming informed about the nasty chemicals in their food and drink and in their lives generally. More and more consumers are making the choice to live as chemical free as they can, or where their budget permits.
What sets essential oils apart, is the fact that they are a natural remedy, but they don't have the range and intensity of side effects that conventional medicines too. Even better for athletes, is that they don't have to worry about anything showing up in tests, that could be the case when taking supplements.
Essential oils affect the brain in approximately 20 seconds after inhaling them. Emotionally, this has a positive effect on the brain. So massaging essential oils onto your body is not just relaxing because of the massage, but if relaxing essential oils are chosen, they will help facilitate that relaxed and calm feeling.
Inhalation is often the first way we come across essential oils. As we find out how else they can help us, we start using them topically, and there are many different oils to support the body's health and wellness. Essential oils can penetrate the cell membrane and eliminate threats.
There have been varying standards in the essential oil industry so historically, aromatherapists have had to be cautious about oral and internal use. doTERRA's essential oils are pure and are a therapeutic grade. If the essential oil comes from a plant you would usually digest, then of course it is safe to consume. There are guidelines available as to how much and how often to take essential oils internally and orally.
Oral use is when you apply an essential oil to the mouth. For example, Clove essential oil can be helpful with a sore tooth. Rub a little onto the area that is sore in the mouth. Some people use Frankincense in the mouth by either putting a drop under the tongue, or rubbing a little into the roof of their mouth.
Essential oils have been used to flavour food for a very long time. A little goes a long way and in fact, sometimes 1 drop can even be too much. In that case, dip a toothpick in the oil, then swirl it around in the food to flavour it. This is often the case with herbs such as Rosemary, Oregano and Basil.
Whilst some bottles of essential oils can be quite costly, there are others that are quite cheap eg. Lemon. Lemon is such a versatile essential oil, that it not only can be used for it's health benefits, but it is often used as a non toxic way to clean. A drop of essential oil costs literally cents. A little goes a long way and so with cleaning products, when you add your other ingredients such as castille soap, the end product is a nature based product that is often cheaper than what you buy at the shop. Even a drop of the more expensive bottles of essential oils still cost cents. If you can help yourself and your family at home, with an essential oil medicine cabinet, it saves you money at the chemist, and you are not supporting a pharmaceutical company, but in doTERRA's case, you are supporting farmers and their communities in poor countries, and a parent who is trying to support their family.
Research continues to be done on the health benefits of essential oils. This kind of research doesn't usually attract a lot of funding. It's not connected with pharmaceutical companies which usually have the money to pay for research. There are lots of anecdotal stories and personal stories in essential oil communities. Essential oils are a low toxic approach to supporting your health and wellness.
